The microstructure consists of austenite and ferrite in near-equal proportion. However, commercial alloys vary. Stainless Steel 317 Coils are high in chromium – 19% – 32%, and molybdenum- up to 5%, but have lower nickel content than austenitic stainless steels. Further, this can require a higher alloyed filler metal because of the cast structure of the weld metal—intended use for 317 Stainless Steel Plates. The high-temperature oxidation resistance for 317 Stainless Steel Coils is valid up to 1500 degrees Fahrenheit.
317 stainless steel plates can be welded by resistance and fusion methods. Generally, the oxy-acetylene welding method is not recommended in these 317 SS Sheets. SA 240 Tp 317 Sheet does not respond to heat treatment, but cold work will increase both strength and hardness.
