Alloy 310 is an austenitic steel designed for high-temperature corrosion in various applications. This alloy has good oxidation resistance to about 1100°C under mildly cyclic conditions. Its high chromium and moderate nickel content give it excellent resistance to sulfidation and good resistance to moderately carburizing atmospheres. Since it's not designed against severe carburizing, a nickel alloy like 330 is used, especially in thermal process tools.
Alloy 310 can be used in oxidizing, cementing, nitriding, and cycling. It finds application in cryogenic operations with very minor magnetic permeability and has high toughness down to – 268°C. Sigma phase precipitation occurs in this alloy when heated between 650 – 950°C. The toughness of the alloy can still be regained at 1100-1150°C.
