They become non-magnetic in the annealed condition but can become magnetic when cold worked. Of the stainless steel grades, 304 is used more than any other grade due to its high ductility and suitability for deep drawn, spun, or formed parts.
Stainless Steel grade 304L has corrosion resistance to a maximum of 1650°F in continuous service and up to 1500°F under intermittent service without substantial scaling. The low carbon content permits it to be used in the as-welded condition, even in corrosive environments, though stress relief may be needed for some applications. 304L possesses good welding characteristics, but precautions should be taken against weld hot cracking. Annealing after severe forming or spinning is often done for the relief of stresses.

Stainless Steel grade 304H is an enhanced carbon version of the type, most suitable for high-temperature service. This austenitic chromium-nickel alloy has increased tensile and yield strength because of its higher carbon content. It finds applications in ASME pressure vessels and other high-temperature services.
The SS 304/304L/304H Long Weld Neck Flanges are resistant to corrosive environments, so their employment in industries such as textiles, chemicals, petroleum, and numerous others like dairy and food processing is suitable. They show excellent service in rural and industrial atmospheric exposures
It is recommended to apply slow cutting speeds and heavy feeds in machining SS 304/304L/304H for processes that minimize work hardening. Chip breakers are called for since the alloy generates long, stringy chips. It is available in different grades with improved machinability. All fusion and resistance welding processes can be satisfactorily used with 304. The AWS E/ER308 or 312 filler metals are recommended. Due to its low carbon content, developed to minimize carbide precipitation at the weld boundaries, many users prefer 304L for cleaner and stronger welds.
